The other day, my cousin and her kids were over for dinner. Her 12 year old needed some school supplies so I took her to the basement and we looked for some stuff we had lying around. I found her a few unused notebooks and a sketchbook for her art class. She was happy. But she found a bucket of my parents’ old cassette tapes and asked me what those things are.

Both my kids (8 and 11 now) have radios with cassette decks in their rooms, and have gotten tapes from Goodwill on occasion.
Now the 8-track and multiple LP players they inherited from their grandpa after he passed a few weeks ago?
GONNA BLOW THEIR MINDS.

Good. Cassettes were horrible. A step above 8-track for sure. But still terrible.

My wife is 25 and I’m 26. Her little sister is 8, and she rode in a car with manual windows last year and legitimately had no idea how to lower the window. She said it was hot in there and my wife said to lower the window and her sister immediately said “I don’t know how. There’s no button!”

All my NWA and Ice Tea is on cassette tape. So when I need to go OG it’s to the tape player.

I have fun telling people that “No, you cannot get a CD player in your 2016 automobile. And no, there is no updated ‘Navigation Maps DVD’ you can buy.”

That looks like a torturous way to solve a relatively small issue :P

My truck is a 2015 Ram 1500 and... no CD player. I *think* my sister’s 2016 Civic doesn’t have one either but I will check next time I drive or go inside it

ha, now i feel old, since the old tapes over here are mine, my parents had vinyls and 8 tracks.

I’m 36 and agree totally.
Things change so rapidly with tech these days. There are many that have no idea what a cassette or even a mini disk is.
It’s funny hearing the youth of today talking about old mobile phones.
Though sometimes I want to clout them round the back of their heads.

Your parents? I’ll have you know that the first piece of music I bought in my life was Houses of the Holy ... on 8-track.
I’ll thank you all for extracting yourselves from my grassplot.

A friend of mine and I were just given ~240 of the damn things... the 3.5" disks are useful when you need one, but man do they suck some times...
By the way, were you still looking for an AGP graphics card?

Yes I do, and I could even make a mix tape by recording songs off the radio.

I recently signed up for a landline for the first time on my life since it was only gonna be an extra $5/month. Largely for the peace of mind in case of emergencies (no long distance and after the first couple days I just turned the ringer off because of telemarketers and people looking for Julio).
My kids were very confused at the idea of a phone that has to be plugged into a wall. “That doesn’t look like a phone!"

I still use one in the Roadmaster. It squeaks, which is annoying, but it works.
A buddy of mine back in the late 90's had an ‘81 Cadillac with an 8-track player. In the 8-track player was an 8-track to cassette adapter. In that was one of these cassette to 1/8" mini-jack adapters, which hooked up to a discman velcroed to the dash. It sounded HORRIBLE!

I teach middle school. The CD thing is already happening. I have to explain that it’s like a DVD, but just for music.

No joke here, my father-in-law has an ‘11 Equinox (which he loves), and he’s actually considering replacing it with a new Impala just because you can still get a CD player in it. It’s the most bizzare conversation I’ve ever had about car shopping, and we’ve had it three times now.

I still rock to Zepplin 2 on Cassette. I’m just a bit too young to have purchased 8-tracks.

A friend in high school had one of those put inside an 8-track to cassette adapter. The mini-jack was then inserted in a portable CD player.

When I was in high school, our physics teacher sometimes showed videos on Laserdisc. But then he was an eccentric older gentleman, and this was only 2005 that I’m talking about.

I remember having a projectionist at my old school called J.D. Who always wore brown leather sandals and sock (with the rest of his clothing of course). He used to wonder around the school fixing old machines such as the language lab recording machines. Basically a massive cassette mounted flat to the table inside one of several tiny cubicles.
Just looking at the picture above takes me back. Now of course it’s all computers computers computers.
